    The Twilight Zone

    February 6, 2014 by Fidessa

I came across the term ‘Twilight Pool’ for the first time this week. The basic idea is that it is essentially a dark pool that lights up certain pieces of information, or at certain times, in order to provide users with some idea of what is or isn’t lurking there. The advantage is that it enables participants to see if the type of liquidity…

Speed Dating by Candlelight – The Growth of Twilight Pools

January 30, 2014 by Peter Fredriksson

    By Peter Fredriksson, Baymarkets
With today’s fragmented markets, firms are faced with an increasingly wide choice of trading venues on which they can execute their business. The majority of these fall into one of two categories; either lit markets or so-called dark pools of liquidity. However, there is a third way. An increasing number of market operators are now starting to adopt a “twilight pool” approach, where the level of opacity is controlled to…

The Watchman’s Rattle – financial regulation in 2014

    January 23, 2014 by Fidessa

In her excellent book, ‘The Watchman’s Rattle’, Rebecca Costa explains the tendency to substitute belief for science when problems become too complicated. The first sign of this is a cognitive threshold, or gridlock, where problems are just passed down from one generation to another with an increasing emphasis on treating short-term symptoms rather…

Why is it News when a woman become CEO?

January 20, 2014 by Trisha Gee

I’m pleased to see that GM has hired the “best person for the job” as their new CEO – that does seem like a good idea.  I’m happy her gender did not get in the way.  What makes me uncomfortable is the international news coverage of the decision of this large manufacturer to hire a woman as their CEO – if she were a man (and/or black/gay/disabled) would the headline read “The camera loves her. So do employees.”?But at the root of that is probably the thing I’m most unhappy about….

Reducing Costs and Speeding Revenue with Automated On-boarding

January 17, 2014 by Jacob Northey

Banks and exchanges are looking for effective ways to save time and money, while enhancing the quality of their business processes and client relationships. But often they get tied up in managing routine (yet essential) tasks that distract them from these goals.
Introducing automation into routine activities such as client on-boarding and certification testing may help firms get back more time and resources to devote to business growth. Not only can this approach help lower your operating…

Goodbye 2013, you were good to me…

January 2, 2014 by  Trisha Gee

Well, if I thought 2012 was the fastest disappearing year on record, that record was smashed into the ground by 2013.  What a year!  And because I didn’t manage to write this on time to publish elsewhere, I can do a more personal reflection of the year here on my very own blog.Apparently, reading over last year’s article, I had goals for 2013:Get more involved in schools/mentoring. Yeah… That didn’t happen. I don’t think I even made a single Meet a Mentor event this year, which is…

    YOW

December 23, 2013 by  Trisha Gee

December disappeared in a rush of vacation and a fleeting tour of Australia.  It’s hard to believe that it’s the eve of Christmas Eve already, it’s almost impossible to feel Christmassy when you’re getting sunburnt on a boat and seeing people in swim-suits wearing santa hats.  A mid-winter festival (complete with trees and fake snow) just feels very odd in summer.I cannot take Christmas seriously in this weatherYOW! is a unique conference, in that it’s the same agenda in three…

    Spock: Data Driven Testing

December 20, 2013 by  Trisha Gee

In the last two articles on Spock I’ve covered mocking and stubbing. And I was pretty sold on Spock just based on that. But for a database driver, there’s a killer feature:  Data Driven Testing. All developers have a tendency to think of and test the happy path. Not least of all because that’s usually the path in the User Story – “As a customer I want to withdraw money and have the correct amount in my hand”. We tend not to ask “what happens if they ask to withdraw money when the cash…

    Redline Trading Solutions and IEX

December 17, 2013 by HFT Review

    By Mike O’Hara

Earlier this week, Redline Trading Solutions announced that IEX, the new equity trading venue owned exclusively by a consortium of buy-side investors, is using Redline’s InRushTM low latency ticker plant.

This is interesting because Redline’s technology is more typically associated with high frequency trading and smart order routing than with a dark pool committed to operating a fair and balanced market.
